So North Korea is testing nuclear weapons again. Is anyone surprised? I seem to recall saying that we would be hearing about the nuclear program in Pyongyang (North Korea's capital) and I was right. Moving past the pride let's get on to North Korea.
The Los Angeles Times recently reported that some politicians were becoming increasingly critical of Hillary Clinton's seeming lack of diplomacy, especially with regard to sensitive situations like North Korea. On the other side, Time magazine wondered if diplomacy would do any good.
Hillary Clinton is doing exactly what she should be doing with North Korea: nothing. They haven't shown any interest in coming to the bargaining table with us because they don't want anything from us other than the respect that comes from being a nuclear nation. I told a friend recently that China, Japan, South Korea, and even Vietnam had more place dealing with Kim Jong Il than we did. Since I said that, China has asked the UN to impose harsher sanctions and Japan and South Korea have also started looking into what they can do to prevent possible disaster.
We cannot think that Kim Jong Il is crazy and we cannot thing that he is weak. He has continued without faltering on a nuclear path despite our best efforts to sanction his people into starvation. China certainly won't allow military action on our end to prevent nuclear armaments and the UN is too weak to prevent it for us. We muist accept that they have a nuke and stop treating the rest of the world like our adopted children.
Hillary's hands-off approach to North Korea should be mimiced in Afghanistan and Iran, but that's for another post. All we can do is wait for North Korea to join the list of nuclear nations and be thankful that China and Russia are more afraid of short range missiles than we should be.

See, the difference is other countries have nukes, where as North Korea might be dumb enouhg to actually use them. Let us pray otherwise.
ReplyDeleteRefresh my memory, who is the only county in the existence of humanity to use a neclear weapon?
ReplyDeleteDidn't we also say that Russia was dumb enough to use one?
Didn't we say that Saddam Hussein wanted to use them?
Kim Jong Il doesn't want to use nuclear weapons, or else he wouldn't be testing the things in Pyongyang, he'd be testing them in Seoul (South Korea's capital). He only wants them so that he'll be respected. Very similar to Iran. We made the world think that having nukes meant being a member of the big boys club and then we get surprised when other nations want to join.
Perhaps you've forgotten that PAKISTAN has nuclear weapons and have started losing control of their country to ACTUAL terrorists. Be more worried about them.
I am, don't worry. But also remember, we are still technically in conflict with North Korea. It kinda muddles things, don't you think?
